Global Warming and Our Future Posted: 3 years ago by
As we all know (and hoopefully no one is in denial about this), we've destroyed this wonderful planet. The polar ice caps are melting and most of the world will flood. I live in Ohio, and will be near the coast, should I live to see this occur.

When I first studied where the new shorline(s) will be I thought "Whew, at least my family will be okay." But then I realised, everywhere will be come super over-populated. Anarchy will reign. I have my doubts that the current American government w...

Are humans 'un-evolving' themselves? Posted: 7 months ago by
I'm reading a wonderful book, The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins at the moment. I will review it here when I'm done, but so far it receives a strong 9/10, if not a full 10, so if you don't want to wait till I finish it, go and buy/borrow/steal it and read it. So, the question... The basic principle of natural selection is that mutations in the genes of biological beings (in this case us humans) cause these genes to change. But genes that are beneficial to our survival tend to survive more than t...

The SERIOUS "Green" Thread Posted: 8 months ago by
Alright, here's the thing. I'd like to collect some information on the whole Environmental sustainability thing. I know CSR is a very broad subject that has a lot of aspects to it, but for the purpose of this I'd like to focus on the environmental side. Why? I did my thesis on CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), and it's gotten me interested in the subject. In what way interested? Not in the "let's be green in everything and talk and talk and save trees and destroy cars" way, but in ...

HEALTH ALERT Posted: 1 year ago by
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! Flu season has started early. VERY early. Cases have been confirmed in New York, Florida, California, Idaho, and Wyoming. http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/badbud1/usmap40.jpg forumimage('http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj259/badbud1/usmap40.jpg','xhttpi274photobucketcomalbumsjj259badbud1usmap40jpg'); But your (not so) friendly neighborhood nurse is here with good news, the flu shot may work this year. Would you still go to Mars if... Posted: 1 year ago by
(piggybacking from this http://www.plime.com/science/f/5497/) ...NASA could only send enough to get you there and keep you alive for a few weeks, and that you would surely die? What if you had to go by yourself? (This has also been proposed, and is something we could do tomorrow if we wanted to) I would do it if my immediate family were dead....

Well, I'm bored today and I'm looking for a good debate. State which side of the fence you're on and why, and let's see if we can get a good conversation started. Nothing is off-limits to say unless you just want to be a troll and flame someone. If you wish to do that, go here....

Stem Cell Research Posted: 9 months ago by
In light of Pres. Obama's recent green-light to embryonic stem cell research, I've had a few debates about it in the non-Plime realm (*gasp* I know, there's actually a world besides Plime!). Do Plimates agree or disagree with the President's decision? Do Plimates support using embryonic stem cells for research, or not? I personally feel that so long research is done ethically and for good reasons (as opposed to just "let's see what happens if we do this"), this is a great thing. I am anticipa...

Wikinomics - Our own Mass Collaboration Ideas... Posted: 7 months ago by
I thought this might be an interesting experiment topic, or even brainstorming topic. I don't know if anyone has read Wikinomics - How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything , but it's quite a nice book about web 2.0 and how it changes the world we live in. Some examples (without reading the book): - SETI@Home - Folding@Home - Google releasing maps to help look for Steve Fosset. - The Goldcorp Challenge So I think everyone kindof gets the picture. The last 2 examples are the closest to what I m...

Debate this: Claws of a cat Posted: 10 months ago by
Animal-people, I have a issue. In a month, RTT has to get neutered, and that means I have less than three weeks to decide whether he gets declawed or not. If you don't know, when a cat is declawed, the muscles that push the retracted claw out are cut, and the claw is removed. It's a controversial procedure, because pro-claw advocates say there is no reason to take the cats claws, and declaw-ers say it protects people and furniture. I'm really on the fence on this, but I want to do what will be best f...

What did Spirit the Mars Rover see? Posted: 10 months ago by
On Sunday, the Mars Rover named Spirit experienced a glitch where it stopped responding to commands from Earth. This valiant little bot, already having roved for 1710 more days than it's planned 90 finally encountered circumstances it couldn't deal with. Like any good conspiracy theorist, I have started this thread to explore what Spirit saw during it's missing day. News Source...

Ugh, sick kitty Posted: 9 months ago by
One of my kitties has developed this nasty brown crust on her ears, nose, and under her chin. I thought it was just a bit of scabbing - just had a bout of ear mites I treated with drops, and the kitty in question likes to try to start fights with my other cats, though she's half their size. I intend to get her checked out when I get paid tuesday, but since there's so many animal savvy folks here, I thought I would ask. Maybe figure out what it is before the fact, and if there's a readily available remedy....
