Okay, misleading title. Specifically, our Canadian geologists.
I was wondering if you could tell me anything about this:
What I know about it is this: I picked it up north of Medicine Bow, Wyoming (the town, not the national forest), along with a handful of other small pieces (these are about 4"-5" long), and one other large piece that weighs about 100 pounds. We made the trip up there looking for petrified wood. There were certainly logs that we found, and some of the pieces we got look like they are petrified wood, (the big one looks definitely tree-like). I don't have pictures of the big one because when I moved back from Wyoming I lived in an apartment, and didn't have a place for a huge rock, so it's at my parents' place waiting for me to buy a house and give a suitable spot. These above looked very cool, but not at all how I expected petrified wood to look. Is that what they are?

Or Tundra Monkey. I believe she was our first resident Plime Geologist. I suggest getting a big hammer and striking the ground, preferably some nice bedrock that happens to be sticking up to ground level, with enough force that they will feel the vibrations through their boots and wonder what disturbance in the geology force was gong on and immediately rush to Plime to find out what's up.
Looks like petrified wood to me...buuut what do I know about rocks and such? They are hard and they hurt when someone throws them at you. And some of them have fancy names. That's about it.
It's super hard to ID rocks from photos. I agree they look like petrified wood, but without being able to get up close and feel the rock and look closely, it's almost impossible to tell for sure.
Do they feel about normal rock weight, or lighter or way heavier? Petrified wood can look very different depending on the age of the material and the process by which it became petrified (metasomatism).
«chinook : Do they feel about normal rock weight, or lighter or way heavier?
The small ones feel a bit heavier than normal, but not surprisingly so. As for the big one... It was heavy as hell to lift into the Bronco, but that's about all I remember about it. Fun tidbit- we did all that while I was about 3 months pregnant. I may have puked during the hike. lol And our dogs rolled in a dead fish near the pond we swam in. All in all it was a fun day.
I don't suppose you have even a rough idea of how old something like those pieces would be, do you?
