Would you still go to Mars if...

...NASA could only send enough to get you there and keep you alive for a few weeks, and that you would surely die?

What if you had to go by yourself?

(This has also been proposed, and is something we could do tomorrow if we wanted to)

I would do it if my immediate family were dead.

*raises hand*

EDIT: But I should clarify... I would not do it for the thrill or the spectacle. I would not do it for the sake of science. I would not do it for the sake of my country.

I would do it because the fame of being one of the first people on Mars would keep my family financially secure for generations. And that would be worth the sacrifice.

He sure isn't. And don't you think that your family would rather have you around instead of some money?? If my Dad did something like that I would be pissed.

Yeah, my wife says she would, but then she keeps asking me if my life insurance premiums are paid up.

In the other thread I said I'd go.

But not in this one. Not if it took my life in 2 weeks.
Besides, once you got up there, what could you really accomplish in just 2 weeks?

If I were a single person and my parents were deceased I would definitely do this. My name would be in the history books for all time. You can't buy that kind of fame!

maybe :) how would I die? cause if it's starving or suffocating that would suck. But like if it's a quick painless death after 2 weeks, sure.

Maybe you could get sucked out into space and freeze suddenly before you get torn apart in the great massive vaccuum!

It would provide a great story line to the next summer's box-office hit: Dead Mars. Of course, the film makers might stretch the truth a little, adding a bit about alien life forms, ancient Martian civilizations, and a walk-on role for Dr. Who.

A spin-off TV show would have to be created which would have the look and feel of a cross between Gilligan's Island and LOST, but taking place on Mars. They'd never get to the end of the two weeks. J.J. Abrams would be the Executive Producer.

You'd pass in about 10 seconds, and not really feel anything except being very dry, and cold due to rapid evaporation of moisture on your skin, eyes, mouth, etc. But your heart would keep beating for a minute or more. If someone got you back in a pressurized environment quickly enough you could live.

And nothing would explode. You'd just eventually dry out and become a dessicated shell.

...I'd probably have to think about it.
Depends on where my life was at the time. Past 60 years old, I do it in a heart beat. I'd also do it without a second though if I was placed in a position where I could not contribute to society.
