The brain-mass-to-body-mass ratios of sharks are similar to those of mammals and other higher vertebrate species.
While blood likely does not provoke a shark to attack, a shark in the vicinity likely can detect the blood. Without any conclusive proof of how sharks might respond, some scientists suggest women stay out of the water while menstruating
The oceanic white-tipped sharks are the most fearless predators. Jacques-Yves Cousteau says that it is: "the only species of shark that is never frightened by the approach of a diver, and they are the most dangerous of all sharks."
There are, on average, 63 shark attacks per year, with less than five fatalities. Sharks, however, are being killed at a rate of 250,000 per day through targeted fishing and bi-catch. Some shark populations are in serious declines. The hammerhead population has declined by 90 percent in the past 20 years. Sharks clearly have more to fear from us than we do from them!
