Most mammals eat placenta. As long as it's properly prepared(and from a healthy source), it can't hurt you!

I'd try it. I'd also try human breast milk, or even human cheese, too, if from the right woman.

Those stigmas are the most baffling to me. Most of us grow up, feeding our bodies on human breast milk. Where is the incongruity?

More to the point, when did "availing yourself of a cow's or goat's titty" become somehow more acceptable than that of a human?

Always seemed backward to me.

I've tried my own breast milk, though I never had enough 'spare' to attempt cheese. I figure if my kid has to eat it, I should at least know what it tastes like. I also tried all of the formulas and baby foods.

However, placenta? No thanks, no matter where it comes from. A bit cannibalistic for me. I had no desire to even see it, let alone fry it up with onions and baby reds.

According to my midwife, where medical treatment was not available, women hemorrhaging after childbirth have been encouraged in the past to eat as much placenta as quickly as they could, as the meat is both iron-rich and so laden with hormone that it could rapidly contract the uterus and slow the bleeding. That trick saved lives and my midwife confirmed that they are still schooled on the possibility in case of dire emergency.

Knowing that, I'm not sure I'd want to eat meat containing that much hormone. Seems like asking for trouble.

You can also do an external uterine massage after the baby is born or put the baby right to the breast to stimulate contractions and stop the hemmorrage as well. Which I think may work quicker than grabbing a fork and digging in.

Ugh, agreed. Even my midwife looked a little grossed out when she mentioned it was used in emergencies.

That's one HELL of an emergency. Then again, if I was dying... yeah, I'd give it a go.
