The largest quake is estimated to have been 8.0 in magnitude and was powerful enough to temporarily make the Mississippi River flow backwards.

I'm surprised to hear that the San Andreas fault earthquakes generate aftershocks for about 10 years.

That New Madrid WAS an amazing thing! There was also a HUGE quake in South Carolina in the late 1860's...
